We are pleased to announce Brunei Darussalam through the Forestry Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism in collaboration with Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), will be jointly organising the Brunei Darussalam Conference on Biodiversity, centred around the theme «Biodiversity: Nature’s Blueprint for Sustainability». The Conference is scheduled to take place from 11th June to 13th June 2024, at the International Convention Centre in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.

The Brunei Darussalam Conference on Biodiversity aims to convene government representatives, private sector leaders, experts from non-governmental organizations, and researchers by facilitating the exchange of knowledge through learning from experts on international best practices in addressing critical strategies for utilizing biodiversity as a foundation for sustainable development. This also includes exploring the potential of utilizing biodiversity in the context of eco-tourism and current market initiatives such as carbon market.

The objectives of this conference are:

  1. To connect policy-makers, academics and non-governmental sectors with a regional network of biodiversity leaders and provide a powerful platform to share knowledge, research findings and best practices globally;
  2. To explore opportunities for green economic growth, including eco-tourism and market initiatives such as carbon market;
  3. To provide vital opportunities for capacity building education and skill development in biodiversity-related fields, nurturing a network of proficient professionals and advocates, aligning closely with the scientific expedition’s goal of fostering multidisciplinary collaboration and expertise exchange; and
  4. To develop a tangible biodiversity conservation action plan and strategies based on key takeaways from the conference and scientific expedition.

At the end of the Conference, it is anticipated that the following outcomes will be attained:

  • Enhanced knowledge and capacity of biodiversity advocates through the knowledge exchanged.
  • Incorporate adoption of international best practices and new economic opportunities in the biodiversity conservation action plan and strategies.
  • Hosting a successful conference and showcasing Brunei’s biodiversity policies and environmental credentials could enhance the country’s international reputation.

In line with the theme, this conference consists of seven (7) thematic topics, namely:

  1. Ecosystem Services: The Lifeline of Biodiversity
  2. Conservation Innovations: Restoring and Safeguarding Biodiversity
  3. Youth Engagement in Biodiversity: Empowering the Next Generation
  4. Blue Biodiversity: Conserving Marine Life for a Resilient Ocean
  5. Biodiversity’s Role in Building Resilience to Climate Change
  6. Biodiversity’s Contribution to Sustainable Economies
  7. Heart of Borneo Scientific Expedition: Exploring Brunei Darussalam’s Biodiversity
